Lion’s mane mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus) are white, globe-shaped fungi that have long, shaggy spines. People can eat them or take them in the form of supplements. Research suggests that they may offer a range of health benefits, including reduced inflammation and improved cognitive and heart health.

People in Asia use these mushrooms for both culinary and medicinal purposes. Health food stores sell lion’s mane extract in supplement form, and both the fungus and its extracts appear to be beneficial to health.

Here we discuss the potential benefits of lion’s mane mushrooms and consider the possible risks and side effects of their use.

 

What are the potential benefits?

Lion’s mane mushrooms may help with the following:

Inflammation and oxidation

Antioxidants may fight both inflammation and oxidation in the body.

Anxiety and depression

Extracts from lion’s mane mushrooms may be beneficial in the treatment of anxiety and depression.

In a 2015 study, mice that consumed lion’s mane mushroom extract displayed fewer depressive behaviors and had blood markers that indicated lower depression. The researchers suggest that this is due to the extract’s anti-inflammatory effects.

The findings of a 2018 animal study support this, with the authors concluding that these mushroom extracts may contain agents that are useful for treating depressive disorders.

In a small Japanese study, women with a variety of health complaints, including menopausal symptoms and poor sleep quality, ate cookies containing lion’s mane extracts or placebo cookies for 4 weeks. The participants who ate the extract reported lower levels of irritation and anxiety than those in the placebo group.

Cognitive health

It is possible that lion’s mane mushrooms might boost cognitive function, but the existing research is mainly on animals.

In one study, lion’s mane dietary supplements appeared to give mice better object recognition and recognition memory.

Other researchers have concluded that the mushrooms may have the potential to treat or prevent diseases that cause a decline in cognitive health, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

However, there is currently a lack of research on the effects of lion’s mane mushrooms in humans with Alzheimer’s disease.

An older Japanese study on adults aged between 50 and 80 years with mild cognitive impairment found that daily consumption of mushroom extract for 16 weeks led to higher scores on cognitive function scales compared with a placebo group. These scores decreased again once the participants stopped taking the extract.

Heart health

Lion’s mane extract may improve heart health, but the research to date has primarily used animal subjects.

Research on rats showed that the mushroom extracts might have a cholesterol-lowering effect.

Cancer

The antioxidant properties of lion’s mane mushrooms may play a role in cancer prevention or treatment.

The results of an in vitro study indicate that lion’s mane extracts have therapeutic potential against human leukemia.

A study using animal models found that these mushroom extracts may also fight liver, colon, and gastric cancer cells.

These findings are promising, but it is not currently possible to confirm that the same effects will apply in people.

Diabetes

Controlling blood sugar levels is key to managing diabetes. In one study, blood sugar levels in rats with diabetes were lower after they received lion’s mane mushroom extract for 4 weeks.

One of the complications of diabetes is nerve damage resulting from prolonged periods of high blood sugar. A 2015 study on rats, in which they ingested lion’s mane extract for 6 weeks, showed positive results, including lower blood sugar levels, reduced feelings of nerve pain, and improved antioxidant activity.

Digestive health

Lion’s mane may help digestive health by fighting inflammation, which could be beneficial for people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The mushroom may also boost immune function and encourage the growth of good bacteria in the gut.

In vitro studies report that lion’s mane mushrooms can result in antibacterial activity that may improve digestion. Research in mice supports these findings by showing that extracts of lion’s mane may protect against stomach ulcers.

Wound healing

Extracts from lion’s mane mushrooms may provide healing benefits for skin wounds.

A study on rats with neck wounds found that topical application of lion’s mane extract led to faster healing.

However, more extensive research is necessary for the medical community to recommend lion’s mane mushrooms for topical use on humans.

Nervous system recovery

Damage to the nervous system can have significant effects on health.

Some research suggests that extracts of lion’s mane mushrooms may encourage nerve cells to grow and repair more quickly.

One study showed that rats with nerve damage receiving a daily extract of lion’s mane mushrooms had quicker nerve regeneration than control animals.

Most studies on lion’s mane mushrooms have used animals, but it appears to be safe to eat the mushrooms in moderate quantities, as people do in many countries in Asia.

Frequencies that almost leveled a skyscraper

Excerpt from the New York World-Telegram, July 11, 1935

Nikola Tesla revealed that an earthquake which drew police and ambulances to the region of his laboratory at 48 E. Houston St., New York, in 1898, was the result of a little machine he was experimenting with at the time which ”you could put in your overcoat pocket.”

The bewildered newspapermen pounced upon this as at least one thing they could understand and Nikola Tesla, “the father of modern electricity” told what had happened as follows:

I told my assistants to say nothing. We told the police it must have been an earthquake.

That’s all they ever knew about it.

Some shrewd reporter asked Dr. Tesla at this point what he would need to destroy the Empire State Building and the doctor replied:

“Vibration will do anything. It would only be necessary to step up the vibrations of the machine to fit the natural vibration of the building and the building would come crashing down. That’s why soldiers break step crossing a bridge.”

Multiple Studies Find Cell Phone Radiation Can Damage Sperm

Multiple review studies have found that cell phone radiation damages sperm – review studies are widely regarded as being of more value than single studies because they review research from a number of individual studies.

A 2016 review study [0] looked at 27 scientific studies investigating the effects of radio frequency (RF) radiation of the type emitted by cell phones on the male reproductive system. The researchers found that 21 of these studies reported some kind of negative impact of these radiation exposures. The effects observed were mainly centered around a decrease in sperm motility (how fast the sperm swims) and viability as well as evidence of DNA damage.

In 2014, systematic review and meta-analysis of published data on RF Radiation induced decline in sperm quality [1] was carried out to evaluate the effects of exposure to RF radiation emitted from mobile phones on human sperm quality.
The researchers who analyzed 10 studies and over 1500 samples, found that cell phone exposure was associated with descent in sperm motility and a decline in sperm viability.

According to the head researcher Prof. Fiona Mathews, results from their study “…strongly suggests that being exposed to radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation from carrying mobiles in trouser pockets negatively affects sperm quality.”

Cell Phone Users Have A Higher Risk Of Damage To Their Sperm

A study [2] on the relationship between cell phone use and semen quality reported that high volume cell phone users have a higher risk of damage to their sperm as a result of frequent radiation from the phone.

Several studies have shown a decline in sperm quality caused by RF radiation. In this context, sperm quality is determined by their motility (how fast the sperm swims), vitality (how strong they are i.e. if they can make it to the egg alive) and their concentration per unit volume in semen.

Men Who Carry Their Phones In Their Front Pocket Have Fewer Mobile Sperm

A 2005 study [3] carried out to evaluate lifestyle factors that influence semen quality reported that men who carried a phone in the front pocket or on the belt had fewer mobile sperm than those who kept a phone elsewhere on the body.

In 2002, German research [4] was carried out to study the influence of electromagnetic waves on sperm motility. In the study design, male volunteers who carried a cell phone on the belt and actively used it for 5 days were evaluated and their semen analyzed.

The studies authors concluded that cell phone use was associated with decreased sperm motility as the percentage of highly motile sperm (classified as “rapid progressive sperm”) dropped massively after exposure to cell phone radiation.

Lab Results Finds Cell Phone Radiation Can Impair Male Fertility

An in-vitro study [5] was carried out at the Cleveland Clinic to evaluate the effects of radiation from cellular phones on human ejaculated semen. The researchers collected semen samples from 23 normal healthy donors and 9 infertile patients; the samples were exposed to cell phone radiation under laboratory conditions. The radiation exposed semen samples showed a significant drop in sperm motility and viability.

The studies authors concluded that “keeping the cell phone in a trouser pocket in talk mode may negatively affect spermatozoa and impair male fertility”.

Cell Phone Radiation Can Cause Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. A man is considered to have erectile dysfunction if he regularly finds it difficult getting or keeping a firm enough erection to be able to have sex, or if it interferes with other sexual activity.

At the World Assembly for Sexual Medicine in 2012 [6], it was reported that men with erectile dysfunction are 2.6 times more likely to have mobile phones in the front pocket of their trousers. The researchers found that these men have a high tendency of having serious cases of erectile dysfunction, due to the close proximity of the phone to their balls which affects the testicles ability to produce testosterone.

Cell Phone Radiation Can Cause Decreased Testosterone

Animal studies have shown that cell phone radiation can cause a profound decrease in testosterone levels. Testosterone is the primary male gender hormone and any change in the normal levels may be devastating for reproductive and general health.

A 2014 study [7] showed that rats exposed to radiofrequency radiation experienced reduced sperm production and mobility, disorders of circadian rhythms, and reduced testosterone levels.

In a 2010 study [8] rats that were exposed to 60 minutes a day of cell phone radiation resulted in a significant decrease in testosterone. In the paper, the researchers concluded that “long-term exposure to mobile phone radiation leads to a reduction in serum testosterone levels.”

These studies clearly show that prolonged exposure to cell phone radiation affects the function and structure of the testes as well as the ejaculatory frequency, which can cause erectile dysfunction.

Reviews on cell phone exposure studies from cell phone radiation data, government documents, manufacturers’ manuals, and similar publications showed that children and unborn babies do face a greater risk for bodily damage that results from MWR given off by wireless devices, according to Morgan and colleagues.

The rate of MWR absorption is higher in children than adults because their brain tissues are more absorbent, their skulls are thinner, and their relative size is smaller. Foetuses are particularly vulnerable because MWR exposure can lead to degeneration of the protective sheath that surrounds brain neurons.

Multiple studies have shown that children absorb more MWR than adults. One found that that the brain tissue of children absorbed about two times more MWR than that of adults, and other studies have reported that the bone marrow of children absorbs 10 times more MWR than that of adults.

“Belgium, France, India, and other technologically sophisticated governments are passing laws and/or issuing warnings about children’s use of wireless devices,” the review authors write.

They write that MWR exposure limits have remained unchanged for 19 years. They also note that smartphone makers specify the minimum distance from the body that their products must be kept, so legal limits for exposure to MWR aren’t exceeded. For laptop computers and tablets, the minimum distance from the body is 20 cm.

The authors explain that current exposure limits were set up based on the wrong assumption that tissue damage from overheating is the only potential danger of wireless devices. But extensive scientific reports have detailed non-heat-related effects from long-term exposure. Although government warnings have been issued worldwide, most of the public are unaware of such warnings.

“There are toys being sold to infants and toddlers that are dangerous,” Morgan says. “The risk from exposure to any carcinogen is higher in children, and the younger the child, the higher the risk. They indicate that certain types of tumours, at least as reported, may have increased in incidence, including the most malignant brain tumours and perhaps hearing nerve tumours”.

Morgan and his colleagues have made some recommendations. The first is that “distance is your friend.” He says holding a cell phone 15 cm (about 6 inches) from your ear “provides a 10,000-fold reduction in risk.”
